“YEAH, OKAY. IF HE checks in, tell him to call me, okay?” Sean put his hand over the phone, sliding his gaze around to get a bead on Abra’s whereabouts. Since she’d expressly told him not to do this, he thought it was better if she didn’t overhear.

Come on. He was a big boy. He got to decide whether he wanted to risk aiding and abetting a fugitive, didn’t he? What could it hurt just to verify that she wasn’t on America’s Most Wanted at the post office?

So he’d sneaked out to the screen porch to put in a quick call to his brother Jake, who was unfortunately still not back at the office or at home or answering his cell phone. Even Cooper, second choice at best, was also unavailable. Probably at the fishing cabin, out of signal range.

Damn it. How was a guy supposed to run a discreet check on the official response to Abra’s absence if he couldn’t get through to anyone he could count on not to ask questions?

Maybe Bill would be okay. He was a pal, another detective who’d come up about the same time. It wasn’t like family, but Sean figured he could trust him. And at least he was in the office.

“Hey, Bill. It’s Sean,” he said, keeping his voice casual and unconcerned. “Listen, I’m out of town and I wondered if you could check on something for me. Just between us, okay?”

Bill’s voice came booming over the wire. “I thought you were gone fishin’ with the bros. What happened? Somebody stealing your trout and you need some backup to take ’em down?”

“Funny. No. The fishing trip didn’t happen. Something else came up. Something personal.”

“That sounds interesting. I didn’t know you had a personal life, Sean.” He chuckled. “So what do you need? Background check to see if your hot new girlfriend has a solicitation record?”

“Nah. No hot new girlfriend,” he said quickly. “Sorry to disappoint you. Nothing important, really. Just…” Adding a sheepish tone to his voice, he improvised, “My mom is a big fan of that TV star, Abra Holloway, and she was dying to know if there was anything new on her vanishing act. You know my ma.”

“Yeah. We all know your ma,” Bill noted gruffly. “She tried to fix me up with one of your cousins at the mayor’s picnic last summer. Jeez. You have my sympathies, pal.”

“So you understand my problem.” Sean found a laugh of his own. “She wants something, she doesn’t give up. Anyway, she wanted me to find out about this Holloway disappearance, and I told her I would. So, anything come in on Abra Holloway? APB, maybe? Any kind of search going?”

“Abra Holloway,” Bill mumbled. “Okay, I wrote myself a note. Haven’t seen anything. Let me check and get back to you.”

“Good enough.” He paused. He shouldn’t be doing this, but he had this gut instinct… “Oh, and Bill? Anything else you can find on her, let me know, okay? Anything at all. But keep it on the down-low.
